Hard work

May 10th, 2008

Today we filled a skip with, amongst other things, all the rotten wood that was, until this afternoon, a shed.  This wasp nest was inside and at first glance I thought it was paper…

Yep, hottest day of the year so far and we’re labouring in the garden all day! Mad dogs and Englishmen..

Sunshine

May 8th, 2008

After spending all day in a windowless office knowing that it was a beautiful sunny day, I couldn’t wait to get home and get into the garden.

May is the month that I feel everything starts to come together. We get more sunshine, the whole world seems to burst into bloom and finally the doing takes over from the planning. There is so much positivity when we get that first sunny snap in May.

As for knitting, ‘Transparency’ (on Ravelry here) is nearly done - I was going to post a progress shot but it is so near to being done (dare I say that?!) that I will hold off as motivation to get it finished. There is also some fabric on order to make some presents for a couple of pregnant friends. I know its been a while since I posted a finished object but please bear with me, I feel much more motivated so I hope this means my sewing mojo is back! :) I also treated myself to a couple of pattern books - knitting and sewing - but would love to know if you have any recommendations of books, patterns or projects.

Bank Holiday

May 5th, 2008

It has been a really productive day.  I planned to spend it knitting, but then I popped into the garden for a bit and that was the whole afternoon gone!  Sy and I pretty much wrecked the place.  We dug up and chopped down.  Normally I like to plant and weed, but we’re completely re-landscaping the garden and it was a great day!

Now we have to try and keep the momentum going!

I was feeling so much better when we came in - so much more energy even though I was tired.  I made a vege-mince cobbler and it was so nice to feel like I accomplished a lot - especially after feeling unwell last week and basically not doing much.

The impact of colours

May 3rd, 2008

greys-012.jpg

I got this undyed, organic wool in the week for my next project. Scottish too - so unlike my shibui it hasn’t travelled the globe to get here. I really want to love it - I feel better about buying it. So far so good, but I’m desperate that when I start knitting it up, it meets my high hopes.

Visiting all the people taking part in colour week has given me lots to think about. As well as lots of new places to visit, it is making me think about what I am trying to achieve here. Setting up this blog was a first step for me - but I need to refocus and remind myself of what it is I want to achieve. What I want to be doing. I guess I’m being more reflective across a lot of areas - but then there are times like that aren’t there? It’s just a case of making the most of them.

I enjoyed taking part in a project where you could stop by and see what other people are doing - how they are interpreting the same themes and what they are noticing - normally I just like to trundle along by myself. Whereas I would have used to have been too intimidated by it, I found it really inspiring. For a week, my world opened up a little and I didn’t hide. That’s real progress I think.

Friday: Blue

Ending the week is blue.

Blue like the cookie monster:

and, shamelessly reliant on old photos,

Blue like the summer sky:

Thanks for stopping by :) and thanks to Leya for an inspiring week.

Thursday: Red/Pink

May 1st, 2008

The hardest day. I have a lot of pink to choose from. Whereas with orange it was a struggle to find things, with pink its a struggle to select things. Here goes my attempt at self restraint:

Wednesday: Orange

April 30th, 2008

The only think I could think of when I saw it was orange day - my old bag from lower school:

A wander around outside soon made me realise how much orange there is - but generally only around construction work

in the street:

and catching the shadow of a tree on a makeshift wall:

I’m really enjoying this colour week - its making me notice the world around me a lot more. I’m also discovering some great blogs of people playing along. If you’re not playing, check out the full list at Curious Bird….

Tuesday: Yellow

You can’t help but feel brighter with yellow.

Monday: Green

April 28th, 2008

Joining in with Leya’s colour week, I didn’t expect the light to be so difficult yesterday. None of my indoor shots would work out, so I ventured outside.

To kick off, unoriginal, but simple beauty:

Sunshine on grass.

and then later, rain on rhubarb:

I love how rhubarb leaves ALWAYS look like they’re still unfurling.

Ouch!

I’m blaming the silk-mohair.

After spending yesterday with crazily soft fibre, today I was drawn to the cacti in the garden centre.  I got numerous puncture wounds trying to carry it into the house so I’m delaying repotting it until I heal!
